The Invisible Enemy

This quick-look report explores the deep psychological and spiritual wounds known as moral injury (MI) experienced by SOF personnel. Unlike PTSD, which is driven by fear, MI arises from events that violate a person’s core moral beliefs—such as failing to prevent harm or following orders that conflict with personal ethics. The report highlights real SOF scenarios, identifies nine key types of morally injurious events, and outlines symptoms that often require chaplain-led, interdisciplinary care. Through narrative-based healing and innovative education methods, USSOCOM is reshaping how the SOF community understands, confronts, and grows from these invisible wounds.
